JFK Partners: Autism and Developmental Disabilities Service

Autism and Developmental Disabilities Clinic

The Autism and Developmental Disabilities Clinic provides a full range of outpatient clinical services to persons with Autism Spectrum Disorders and other developmental disabilities and their families. Services are organized around the client and family goals. Clinical activities available to clients include disciplinary and interdisciplinary evaluations for purposes of diagnostic clarification, and for provision of recommendations for treatment. Recommendations specifically address education, social, emotional, vocational, or recreational needs. Local and regional school districts contract with the Autism and Developmental Disabilities Clinic for on-site interdisciplinary assessments and consultation.

Treatment involves a wide range of individual and group activities, carried out both by individual discipline providers and by interdisciplinary teams. Therapies may be provided by any of the clinicians and may involve family therapy, social skills group, cognitive-behavior group therapy for treatment of anxiety symptoms in ASD, supportive counseling, behavioral therapies, parent guidance, and parent information sessions. Comprehensive treatment programs for young children with autism are a particular specialty of the clinic. Treatment may be delivered at JFK Partners, in homes, or in other community settings. All clinical activities focus on increasing personal independence, social relationships, participation and responsibility, and community involvement and inclusion for persons of all age with developmental disabilities and their families.

Major Goals:

  1. Provide a vehicle for the training of interdisciplinary professionals in their final years of pre-service training in clinical skills, inclusive education, and community based programs;
  2. Provide state-of-the-art clinical services to individuals of all ages and families who have autism or other developmental disorders, often in combination with psychiatric disorders;
  3. Join with and support community agencies and resources in providing services to individuals with developmental disabilities and their families;
  4. Provide ongoing consultation to school districts serving children with severe disabilities in inclusive educational settings;
  5. Increase the network of social contacts and skills for adults with developmental disabilities.
