Early Intervention InitiativesThroughout its history, JFK has played an instrumental role in defining and demonstrating recommended practices in early intervention for children with developmental disabilities and special health care needs. Current efforts focus on providing early intervention services that are transdisciplinary in nature, focused on functional outcomes, and include education of parents and other care providers in strategies that support children's participation in their family's everyday routines at home and in the community. Federal grants, state contracts, and fees for service, provide the support for these efforts. In addition to demonstrating and evaluating delivery of functionally oriented therapy services, these efforts identify ways to improve services delivery systems. Specific areas being addressed include funding mechanisms, lack of critical knowledge and skills among therapists, lack of access to necessary specialized equipment, and shortages of personnel. These early intervention programs are a key resource for practica experiences for trainees. Specific projects contributing to this initiative are described in this section.
